Tips from Regina Hierholzer, BCCC Instructional Designer
Videos You Create Yourself
- A video should be paired with a learning activity to test student's knowledge and to help you measure student participation.
- Always plan/design your lecture video before jumping in and creating it.
- Keep video lectures short. Five minutes is ideal. If your material requires longer time, break the video up into chunks of information and record more than one.
- Write out a script to help you organize your thoughts. You can give the script to your students as an electronic hand-out.
- All videos you create should include closed captions.
Using Existing (Other People's Videos)
- Time length is important. Look for videos under 10 minutes in length because you don't want to devote too much time entirely to one source.
- Look for videos that are more compelling than what you have to write.
- Watch for bad videos. Make sure the content is accurate and reliable.
- Ask for students' feedback on the video.
