Research and analysis papers will focus on conducting research by utilizing the databases in the BCCC library and analyze scholarly, peer-reviewed articles using critical thinking skills as covered in “The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking” by Paul and Elder.

Students will utilize any of the following databases from the BCCC library:

Find at least one scholarly, peer-reviewed article related to a specific theory in the textbook “Introducing Communication Theory: Analysis and Application” by West and Turner.

Conduct a critical analysis of the article by identifying:

  • the purpose of the article,
  • key question(s) the article addresses,
  • information (evidence) utilized in the article,
  • key concept(s) addressed in the article,
  • assumptions embedded in the article,
  • inferences or line of reasoning in the article,
  • point of view of the author,
  • implications or consequences of the position of the author.

Students should also assess the article using intellectual standards:

  • Precision
  • Relevance
  • Depth
  • Breadth
  • Logic
  • Significance
  • Fairness

In their paper, students will also discuss why they chose this article as well as how they can apply this concept/theory in their personal lives, scholarship, or professional lives.

The article, textbook, and any supporting materials must be included in a works cited section organized using APA guidelines.Papers must be submitted using MS Word, 12-point, Times New Roman font, utilize normal margins and be double spaced.
