Finding Bias - CRAAPP Test

Dictionary.com defines bias as:

"a particular tendency, trend, inclination, feeling, or opinion, especially one that is preconceived or unreasoned."

You already have a bias when you read a news article. It colors the way you interpret what you are reading. Having a bias is not necessarily good or bad, but you need to be aware of it when researching.

Use the CRAAP Test to evaluate your news articles for bias.

EBSCOhost Database

This assignment uses Academic Search Premier to find magazine articles. Academic Search Premier is published by EBSCOhost and contains magazine articles from American and international periodicals.

Database Tips

1) Check the following:

  • Full Text is checked
  • "Magazine" is checked
  • Check dates - last 5 years or last 10 years?
  • Does the country origin of the article matter?

2) Choose MLA 8 

  • Check the format after you have copied and pasted

3) Email the article and citation to yourself

  • Some databases do not send the citation.

4) When searching:

  • Mix and match keywords
  • Pay attention to terms in the "subjects"
  • Use synonyms:
    • ex: income inequality or income distribution
    • ex: future technologies or emerging tehnologies
