Scholarship as Conversation

Take a look at this video for an innovative way to look at research and scholarship. (Turn the volume way up to hear the puppets, or just read the captions. The voices are great, though.)

Library Databases

These Library databases will be useful for most Informative Speech topics.  Find high-quality, reliable information from reference books, journal articles, and newspapers.  There are tutorials for some of these under the "Database Tutorials" tab.  Contact us if you can't find what you need!

Accessing the Databases from Home

It is not unusual for students to have problems gaining access to the library databases. Please don't despair! Read the information in this box, and if you still have problems, call or visit the Help Desk on the third floor of the Library: 215-968-8191.

  • You must log in with your username and password.
  • Please don't use your entire email address, just the digits and characters up to the '@' sign.
  • Some databases have limited simultaneous users (CINAHL and Oxford Music for example). This means that only a certain amount of people can access the database at a time. If this might be the case for you, try back later.

Reference Books You Might Want To Consult

Don't forget about reference books when you are trying to learn more about your topic or put it in context. These are only a sample of the many dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, and other tools you will find in the Library's Reference Department which can help you gather information about a place, time, or culture related to your research topic. Many also include suggestions for further reading. I blab more about how you might use these books in my BLOGPOST HERE. Call numbers are included in this list to make your search easier.
